Need

This Jujitsu dojo needed a place to post newsletters, photographs, information, and technique photographs.contracted me and my associate to create a web presence for them.

Solution

I collaborated with Sabih Mir to create a dynamic Web site for the dojo. The site’s welcome page houses the dojo’s monthly newsletters, which normally contain a blog-style essay by one of the instructors, information about upcoming seminars, and dojo news. The dojo rank manual, which describes techniques and requirements for each belt level, is housed on this site in an online version. In the techniques section of the site, a number of Jujitsu techniques are fully documented with step-by-step descriptions and photos. The site also contains instructor biographies, a glossary of Jujitsu-related terminology, and information for potential students about the types of training provided by the dojo.

Contributions:
PHP, XML, XSLT, XHTML, and CSS development.
Modular and Scalable
The content of this site is organized conceptually into XML files and transformed into web pages using XSLT templates. This method allows total separation between data and presentation, making the site easy to adapt to new visual design or modes of presenting content.
Meaningful Markup
This site’s markup is not oriented toward presentation, but uses semantically significant elements to present data in a way that is meaningful to markup-aware applications. For example, the site’s navigation links are all contained in an HTML unordered list instead of into a series of links.
CSS Layout
The entire layout of this site is specified by a series of Cascading Style Sheets as a way of keeping presentation information and site content separate. This approach also helps keep page size to a minimum, resulting in web browsers needing less time to download and render the pages on the site.
The style sheets used by this site employ a number of sophisticated CSS techniques, including the fast rollover technique.
